Japan, late 1960s. American servicemen stationed across the country brought more than uniforms and military hardware with them. On and around U.S. air bases, American pop culture collided with Japanese imagery, local craftsmanship, and the visual language of military souvenirs — creating an aesthetic that would become inseparable from the era.
The “Suka Snoopy” T-Shirt draws directly from that world. TSPTR reproduces a Vietnam-era U.S. Air Force T-Shirt from the late 1960s, originally sold through an airbase Post Exchange — the military retail stores better known simply as the PX.
At its center is Snoopy in aviator gear, walking beneath the unmistakable silhouette of a Japanese crane. The numbers “68” and “69” frame the graphic alongside the simple word “JAPAN”, placing the design firmly within the period when American servicemen were stationed throughout the region during the Vietnam War.
The name “Suka” references the Sukajan tradition — short for “Yokosuka Jumper” — born from the souvenir garments created for American servicemen stationed in post-war Japan and known for combining U.S. military culture with distinctly Japanese imagery.
It’s a fascinating piece of military and pop-cultural history: Charles M. Schulz’s Snoopy transformed into an unofficial serviceman, his instantly recognizable character adapted to the experiences, humor, and souvenirs of Americans stationed thousands of miles from home.
Recreated by TSPTR under official Peanuts license, the original graphic is printed with water-based ink on premium-weight certified organic cotton and ethically made in Portugal — a late-1960s PX souvenir brought back to life more than half a century later.
