Hollywood, 1968. Steve McQueen was no longer content with simply being its biggest star. At the height of his career, the actor, racer, and eternal outsider was gaining greater control over his own films through Solar Productions — the company behind Bullitt and later closely involved with his obsessive passion project Le Mans. Solar represented McQueen on his own terms: independent, uncompromising, and increasingly interested in life on the other side of the camera.
But there was another side to the Solar story. According to the story behind TSPTR’s graphic, Charles Manson had attempted to get a screenplay into McQueen’s hands through Solar Productions and was rejected. McQueen subsequently learned that his name had reportedly appeared among potential targets connected to the Manson Family. The story became even more chilling after August 9, 1969, when his friends Sharon Tate and Jay Sebring were murdered. McQueen later claimed that he had originally planned to join Sebring at Tate’s home that night, but changed his plans at the last moment.
The experience reportedly left its mark on him. McQueen began carrying a handgun, an extraordinary collision between the mythology of the fearless Hollywood antihero and the very real paranoia surrounding Los Angeles at the end of the 1960s.
TSPTR turns this darker chapter of McQueen mythology into a graphic that feels like a lost Solar Productions crew shirt. McQueen’s unmistakable face is surrounded by motorcycles — a nod to the lifelong obsession that existed alongside his film career. He regularly raced motorcycles away from Hollywood, sometimes entering events under the pseudonym Harvey Mushman.
And Solar itself was far more than a name on a T-Shirt. For Le Mans, the company entered a camera-equipped Porsche 908 in the actual 1970 24 Hours, capturing genuine racing footage from inside the competition — exactly the kind of obsessive pursuit of authenticity that defined McQueen.
Printed with eco-friendly ink on TSPTR’s premium-weight certified organic cotton jersey and ethically made in Portugal, this is a T-Shirt about Steve McQueen beyond the movie star — filmmaker, racer, outsider, and the man determined to do things his own way.
