Studio D'Artisan 8198 ‘Amami Oshima’ Mud-Dyed Loopwheeled T-Shirt – Brown

Some garments stand out because of their construction. Others because of their color. The Studio D'Artisan 8198 is exceptional for both. It combines two of Japan's most labor-intensive textile traditions: loopwheel knitting in Wakayama and the centuries-old Dorozome mud-dyeing technique of Amami Oshima.

The foundation is a heavyweight 100% North Carolinian cotton loopwheeled jersey, knitted slowly on traditional Tsuri-Ami machines using only the weight of the yarn itself. This low-tension process creates a fabric with natural irregularity, remarkable softness, and a substantial feel that modern high-speed knitting machines cannot replicate.

The real story begins on Amami Oshima, a remote island between Kyushu and Okinawa. Here, each T-Shirt is individually dyed using tannins extracted from the native Techi (Sharinbai) tree and iron-rich mud formed from geological layers over 1.5 million years old. Through repeated immersion in plant dye and mud baths, the fabric develops rich, earthy tones impossible to achieve with synthetic dyes. Every piece displays unique variations that reflect the natural dyeing process. As a result of the traditional Dorozome process, the jersey feels firm at first, yet it gradually softens with washing and wear while retaining the depth and character of its naturally developed color.
