Studio D'Artisan 8185 'Bengala' Dyed Loopwheeled Sweatshirt – Red

The Studio D’Artisan 8185 sweatshirt is a quiet statement of Japanese textile history, combining traditional Bengala dyeing with classic loopwheel construction. The warm, earthy red tone comes from Bengala dye, also known as Bengara. The two names refer to the same ancient pigment, derived from iron-rich soil. “Bengala” points to the historical origin of the technique in the Bengal region of India, while “Bengara” is the Japanese term that became established through centuries of domestic use.

Unlike plant-based dyes, Bengala is exceptionally colorfast and resistant to fading. Historically used for ceramics, lacquerware, and even the exterior walls of Japanese houses, the pigment was valued not only for its color but also for its protective qualities. On fabric, it produces a deep, muted red that remains stable over time and gains subtle depth with wear.

The sweatshirt itself is made from original loopwheeled cotton fleece, slowly knitted on low-tension hanging machines in Wakayama. The yarn is spun on the historic Ishikawadai ring-spinning machine, preserving natural texture and softness. Finished with reverse weave construction, elongated ribbed cuffs, set in vertically knit fleece, and durable stitching, this piece balances structure, comfort, and longevity. Entirely made in Japan, it is a garment built to age with character rather than wear out.
