The Studio D’Artisan 4619 Sashiko Type II Jacket combines one of Japan’s oldest textile traditions with one of the most influential silhouettes in American workwear. Woven from the same original 14oz selvedge sashiko fabric as the matching 1907 jeans, it showcases a remarkably deep indigo tone and a richly textured surface that immediately sets it apart from conventional denim jackets.

Originally, sashiko was developed in Japan as a hand-stitched reinforcement technique, extending the life of heavily worn work garments. Studio D’Artisan recreates this distinctive appearance by weaving an exceptionally dense selvedge sashiko fabric on traditional power looms. Dyed using the traditional kasezome skein-dyeing method, both the warp and weft absorb indigo deeply, producing a rich, luminous color that develops character gradually. Rather than creating dramatic high-contrast fades, the fabric evolves with subtle tonal variation that emphasizes its remarkable woven texture.

The jacket is based on the legendary Type II design introduced during the early 1950s. Originally developed as an evolution of the first denim jacket, the Type II added greater freedom of movement through side pleats while retaining the clean, functional workwear aesthetic that has made it one of the most enduring jacket designs ever created.

Studio D’Artisan modernizes the pattern with a slightly roomier fit through the chest and armholes for everyday comfort while discreet handwarmer pockets add welcome functionality without compromising the classic appearance.
