Somewhere in the high desert of New Mexico, around the 1920s, a Navajo craftsman traded silver conchos for wool cloth at a dusty trading post. His shirt, decorated with stamped buttons, spoke of pride, resilience, and cultural continuity. That moment - between Native tradition and utilitarian American workwear - inspires the Brave Man Navajo Shirt by Stevenson Overall Co.
This interpretation revives that spirit with concho-style buttons, each one handcrafted in the USA from original U.S. pennies bearing the iconic 'Indian Head' motif - a design minted between 1859 and 1909. The copper-alloy buttons develop a warm, aged patina and a fly-front design along the lower placket provides a clean, workwear-inspired closure, while the shirt is finished with stamped concho ornaments on each collar point, featuring scalloped edges and a sunburst motif - a tribute to traditional Navajo silverwork and classic Western tailoring.
The body is cut from Loden Beaver Melton, a Japanese-milled wool with Alpine origins. The surface is heavily brushed, sanded, and then pressed smooth, resulting in a soft, low-sheen texture reminiscent of real beaver fur - without using any animal fur at all.
This special shirt threads past into present - merging Native influence, time-honored techniques, and precision-made materials.
