Samurai Jeans ‘Musha Kite’ 7oz Inlay Loopwheel T-Shirt – Ivory / Ripened Cotton

Inspired by the vibrant kite culture of Japan's Edo period, this Samurai Jeans T-Shirt celebrates one of the country's most enduring folk traditions. The striking back print features a classic musha-e design – a warrior portrait traditionally painted onto handcrafted kites made from sturdy Japanese paper. Considered symbols of good fortune, strength and prosperity, these kites have long been flown to celebrate seasonal festivals, pray for children's healthy growth and wish for success in life.

The fabric itself is every bit as remarkable as the artwork. Samurai's original 7oz inlay fabric is crafted from specially aged cotton, a process that restores the fibres to their natural softness before spinning. Instead of being used immediately after unpacking, the cotton is allowed to mature for 30 to 50 days in a carefully controlled environment, regaining the fluffy texture it possessed immediately after harvest.

In Wakayama, the yarns are then knitted on vintage loopwheel machines using a highly demanding inlay construction. While conventional loopwheel machines produce around one metre of fabric per hour, this intricate technique yields less than half that amount. The result is an exceptionally soft, almost moisture-rich fabric with impressive density, reduced stretch and a uniquely comfortable feel. Though created on traditional tubular knitting machines, the T-Shirt features side seams to achieve a more refined silhouette.
