Munqa is the Native American term for “Large Field” of the Hopi people. The brand was established in 2010 by Japanese designer Muu under the premises of Art and Peace. His “NEWTIVE: New + Native” jewellery concept infuses Native American artisanship with contemporary pop and subculture designs.
All jewellery is completely handmade one by one from start to finish by skilled Japanese artisans using traditional Native American making techniques. Munqa does not use any cast techniques, thus every item is slightly different in face and shape. Like vintage Native American jewellery, the artisan melts the silver to make sheet metal. After that, all shapes are cut out by hand using handmade stamps. All details and fine lines are hand-carved (traditional muscle carving). Depending on the complexity and size of the item the process from scratch to finish might take up to 2 hours.
