Some fabrics are designed simply to keep you warm. Others are created to tell a deeper story through the way they are woven. The Deluxeware 1940s “Native Border” shirt belongs firmly to the latter. Inspired by the geometric border motifs often seen in early Southwestern textiles and Native American trade blankets, the design echoes patterns that became part of American frontier culture during the late 19th and early 20th century. Deluxeware translates this visual language into a distinctly Japanese interpretation of American workwear.
At the heart of the shirt is an extremely rare three-layer woven heavy flannel, developed exclusively for this model. The fabric is produced in Nishiwaki, Hyogo Prefecture, one of Japan’s historic centers of yarn-dyed weaving. Using a vintage dobby loom, the base cloth is constructed as a double weave, while the multicolored border pattern is created through a true triple-layer weave. This complex structure allows several yarn layers to overlap, producing remarkable depth, insulation, and dimensional texture that conventional flannel cannot achieve.
The yarn structure itself uses 20/1 warp yarns and 20/2 weft yarns, resulting in a fabric that feels dense and substantial while remaining soft and comfortable against the skin. The layered construction also gives the interior a completely different visual character than the outside, revealing the intricate structure hidden within the fabric.
Construction takes place at Deluxeware’s own factory in Odate, Akita Prefecture, where the shirt is sewn using 1960s UNION SPECIAL triple-needle machines alongside other vintage equipment. This traditional manufacturing approach produces strong seams, subtle puckering, and the kind of durability associated with vintage garments.
Cut in a 1940s-inspired workwear silhouette, the Native Border shirt wears almost like a lightweight shirt jacket. The heavy flannel provides warmth and structure, while the unique woven pattern ensures the piece stands apart from conventional flannels.
A technically ambitious fabric combined with careful vintage construction — a shirt that showcases how far Japanese textile craftsmanship can push a classic American workwear idea.
