The Dalee's and Co. Beak Flap Shirt is built around an intriguing idea from mid-century American workwear: a shirt designed to sit somewhere between hard-wearing work clothing and more refined tailoring. Its clean collar, structured placket, and balanced proportions give it a sharper appearance than a conventional work shirt, while the twin flap pockets and robust construction keep its working roots clearly visible.
At the heart of the BF.49 is an unusual plain-weave brushed flannel, developed in Osaka from references to 1950s flannel shirts. Woven from 100% cotton on old-fashioned looms in the Senshu region, the fabric combines a surprisingly light feel — comparable to a 6oz chambray — with the additional warmth and soft touch created by its brushed surface. The result is a flannel that feels comfortable without the bulk normally associated with heavier winter shirts.
The details reinforce the vintage character. Two chest pockets feature distinctive pointed “beak” flaps, while dark buttons provide a clean contrast against the Navy fabric. Construction takes place at the company’s factory in Odate, Akita Prefecture, using vintage 1940s Union Special double-needle machinery — connecting the shirt’s mid-century inspiration with equally traditional Japanese manufacturing.
The Beak Flap Shirt is a particularly versatile interpretation of vintage American workwear: lightweight enough for everyday wear, warm enough for cooler weather, and refined enough to move well beyond its utilitarian origins.
