Commissioned in 1942 on Oahu, Hawaii, Marine Attack Squadron 223 earned its reputation during the brutal Pacific campaign, including the Battle of Guadalcanal. The hand-painted squadron insignia on the back recalls the artwork once found on flight jackets, maintenance lockers, and barracks walls — personal emblems that represented brotherhood, courage, and unit pride. Marked with Atsugi, Japan 1953–1954, the design commemorates the squadron's post-war deployment during a pivotal period of rebuilding and Cold War readiness, while the subtle chest print mirrors the understated military issue garments worn on base.
The body is knitted in Japan from specially developed slub yarn cotton, creating an irregular vintage texture reminiscent of early military sportswear. Combined with traditional loopwheel construction, the fabric offers exceptional comfort, natural character, and will develop even more depth with years of wear.
