Buzz Rickson’s X William Gibson A-2 Leather Jacket – Horsehide / Black

The Horsehide A-2 leather jacket is Buzz Rickson’s interpretation of the legendary Rough Wear 23380 contract, produced as part of the William Gibson Collection. The concept originates from Gibson’s novel Pattern Recognition, in which the protagonist wears a fictional black Buzz Rickson’s MA-1. That idea evolved into a fully realized, all-black militaria collection grounded in historical accuracy.

This jacket is made from vegetable-tanned horsehide, originally dyed brown and finished with a black pigment topcoat. With wear, the black surface gradually breaks down, allowing the brown core to emerge and create a deep, natural patina. The leather is finished using a semi-aniline process, preserving grain structure while maintaining durability.

Details follow original military specifications, including a Talon mil-spec zipper, brass snap fasteners, wool ribbed cuffs and hem, and a cotton lining. Manufactured entirely in Japan, this A-2 balances archival precision with a distinctive monochrome character that evolves over time.
