Buzz Rickson’s 13oz ‘Flying Tigers’ Freedom Sleeve Sweatshirt – Oatmeal

This Buzz Rickson’s sweatshirt is a faithful reproduction of a short-lived athletic design from the 1940s and 1950s, developed to maximize freedom of movement. Its defining feature is the so-called Freedom Sleeve construction: the sleeves run in a distinctive S-shape from shoulder to body, eliminating the usual underarm seam. The result is a noticeably natural range of motion and a silhouette that stands apart from standard sweatshirts.

Because this construction required significantly more time and skill to sew, original Freedom Sleeve sweatshirts were only produced for a brief period. Buzz Rickson’s recreates the method using traditional two-needle stitching, allowing the curved seams to age beautifully and develop subtle fades with wear.

Finished with the classic “Flying Tigers” front print, the design references the American Volunteer Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps, active in China, Burma, and India during World War II. A rare piece of athletic history, reproduced with precision in Japan.
