Few shirts carry a story as rich as this one. The Deluxeware HV-19A “Betsy Ross” Flannel was created to celebrate the brand’s 20th anniversary and quickly became one of the most sought-after heavy flannel shirts in Deluxeware’s history. Its striking red, blue, and white plaid draws inspiration from the early American flag and the legend of Betsy Ross, the Philadelphia seamstress often credited with sewing the first Stars and Stripes in 1776.
The fabric itself is a technical achievement. Woven in Nishiwaki, Hyogo Prefecture, the shirt uses a 2/1 twill heavy flannel with a complex double-layer structure. The face combines 10 × 8 air-spun yarns, creating a dry, structured texture, while the inside uses 80/2 × 20/2 ring-spun yarns for softness against the skin. The result is a fabric that feels substantial yet surprisingly comfortable, offering warmth, depth, and a distinctive vintage character.
Production takes place in Odate, Akita Prefecture at Deluxeware’s own factory, where the shirt is sewn using vintage UNION SPECIAL triple-needle machines from the 1960s alongside other historic equipment dating back to the late 19th century. This slow and precise process creates durable seams and the irregularities collectors appreciate.
A printed star pattern inside the back panel references the original 13 states of the early United States, completing the historical concept behind the design.
