Buzz Rickson's x William Gibson MA-1 Slender Flight Jacket – Black

Born from an unexpected connection between Japanese military reproduction specialists and one of the most influential science fiction writers of our time, the Buzz Rickson's x William Gibson Black MA-1 has become a modern icon with a remarkable story.

In his groundbreaking 2003 novel Pattern Recognition, William Gibson introduced Cayce Pollard, a fashion-sensitive, anti-fashion protagonist whose most treasured possession was a black Buzz Rickson's MA-1 flight jacket. There was just one problem: neither the U.S. Air Force nor Buzz Rickson's had ever produced an authentic MA-1 in black. The jacket existed only in Gibson's imagination.

Inspired by this fictional creation, Buzz Rickson's brought the jacket to life in 2004, launching the William Gibson Collection as part of the brand's tenth anniversary. The result was a distinctive interpretation of the legendary 1950s military flight jacket, combining historically accurate materials and construction with an entirely black appearance.

The BR16027 Slender Model retains the original MA-1's unmistakable character while introducing a slimmer, more contemporary silhouette. It maintains a traditional, shorter flight jacket length, with a fitted waistband and a clean, balanced profile.

Constructed from heavyweight 2/2 nylon twill based on 1957 USAF specifications, the jacket features a substantial wool-cotton pile interlining for insulation. Authentic-style Crown aluminum zippers, wool-lined handwarmer pockets, ribbed wool cuffs and collar, and the signature utility pocket on the left sleeve preserve the functional details of the original military design. A distinctive white U.S. Air Force insignia print, featuring the historic winged star emblem, and snap-fastened oxygen attachment tabs on the upper chest add individual character to the otherwise understated black design.

Made in Japan with Buzz Rickson's exceptional attention to historical accuracy, the Black MA-1 Slender represents a rare meeting of military heritage, literature, and contemporary menswear.
