At first glance it looks like a simple T-shirt. In reality, the Samurai SJST-SC01 is the result of one of the most ambitious fabric projects in modern Japanese denim culture. Developed as part of the Samurai Cotton Project, this tee is made entirely from cotton grown by Samurai Jeans themselves in Sasayama, Hyogo. The cotton is harvested by hand, spun into irregular yarn, and transformed into a remarkably dense 16oz heavyweight jersey with a beautifully slubby texture inspired by Samurai’s legendary Zero denim.

The fabric is knitted in Wakayama on traditional tubular knitting machines and then sewn in Kyoto using 1960s vintage Union Special 36200 flat seam machines. The collar features a triple-needle binder construction, creating exceptional durability while maintaining comfort. Every seam uses cotton thread, staying true to traditional construction methods.

Depending on the color, the fabric is either left completely natural or dyed using traditional ingredients from the Sasayama region such as black soybeans or Tamba chestnut skins, creating organic, deeply nuanced tones that cannot be replicated with synthetic dyes.

The result is a T-shirt with unusual depth, texture, and character. Substantial yet comfortable, it will soften, evolve, and develop its own personality with wear.

A deceptively simple piece built with the same obsessive attention to detail that defines Samurai Jeans.

The Samurai Cotton Project

The Samurai Cotton Project has set its sights on revitalizing traditional methods of 100% organic and domestic clothing production. By personally cultivating and hand-harvesting cotton, they are dedicated to creating garments of exceptional quality. However, this undertaking presents significant challenges in practice.

During the 1970s, Japan experienced a significant decline in cotton production, resulting in a heavy reliance on imported cotton. The utilization of modern production techniques, which relied on chemicals, raised concerns about health and environmental contamination.

Aligned with the principles of "making things in Japan, for Japan, in the Japanese way," the project strives to revive the sense of pride associated with traditional craftsmanship and pass down these invaluable techniques to future generations.

The project's commitment extends well beyond a single generation, aiming to reintroduce sustainable practices that uphold values of tradition, quality, and environmental well-being. Through the Samurai Cotton Project, they are actively redefining the landscape of clothing production and consumption.
