Freenote Sateen Twill Utility Shirt – Olive

The Sateen Twill Utility Shirt has been part of Freenote Cloth since the earliest days of the brand. While many designs evolve season after season, this one has remained largely untouched. The reason becomes clear the moment you handle it: the pattern, the fabric, and the construction already do exactly what they are supposed to do.

Its design follows the logic of traditional American work shirts. The cut leaves enough room for movement throughout the day, while the two oversized chest pockets provide practical storage and define the shirt’s utilitarian character. It is a piece built around function first, shaped by the kind of garments once worn in workshops, garages, and on long days outdoors.

The fabric is woven in Japan using 11oz cotton sateen twill, a weave known for its dense structure and smooth surface. Compared to standard twill, sateen develops a slightly richer texture while remaining extremely durable. After weaving, the shirt undergoes a stone wash and enzyme wash, giving the fabric a soft feel and a natural, time-worn appearance from the start.

Every detail reflects Freenote’s careful approach to construction. 1/8 inch double-needle stitching reinforces the seams, while custom corozo belt buttons, carved from tagua nut, secure the front and pockets. The shirt is then cut and sewn in the United States, continuing Freenote’s philosophy of pairing Japanese textiles with American craftsmanship.

Over time, the olive sateen begins to change with the wearer. The fabric softens further, the seams develop contrast, and the shirt slowly records the rhythm of everyday life.
