The Type L-2B is part of Buzz Rickson’s long-standing collaboration with science fiction author William Gibson. Inspired by the fictional black MA-1 worn by the protagonist in Gibson’s novel Pattern Recognition, this jacket brings a never-issued military concept into reality. While original U.S. Air Force flight jackets were produced exclusively in sage green, the black series explores the idea of a fully black flight jacket built with authentic military specifications.
This model is a faithful reproduction of a 1958 L-2B manufactured by Skyline Clothing Corporation. The L-2B was introduced in the mid-1950s as a lightweight flight jacket for intermediate climates and remained in service until the early 1970s, before being replaced by the CWU-36/P. The jacket is constructed from heavy 2/2 nylon twill and lined with a brushed rayon and wool blend in champagne gold, matching the original issue.
Subtle variations in black tones across nylon, knit, tape, and hardware highlight the complexity of military garments and underline Buzz Rickson’s uncompromising approach to authenticity. Manufactured in Japan, the BR15625 combines historical accuracy with a restrained, modern presence.
