These hand-dyed sashiko trousers from Studio D’Artisan are something truly special and, if I may say, a rare Japanese cultural heritage. The 12oz selvedge sashiko fabric has been dyed with natural indigo, embodying the perfect 'Japanese Blue.'
"Awa-ai" refers to the indigo dyeing tradition of the Awa region on the island of Shikoku in Japan. "Awa" is the historical name of the region, and "ai" means indigo in Japanese. Since 900 AD, both indigo cultivation and dyeing techniques have been perfected in the Awa region, and the "Awa Shoai Indigo Dyeing Method" has been recognized as a cultural heritage of Tokushima Prefecture since 1968.
Details such as the indigo marbling on the waistband interior or the piping craftsmanship are the final touches that enhance the brilliance of the natural indigo dye. Every pair of pants is essentially one-of-a-kind due to the hand-dyeing process, as each sashiko pant differs from the others, and slight irregularities in dyeing are intentional and part of the beauty of the product.
