The "Cho-Nin Ride" design of this Samurai Heavyweight T-shirt is an homage to the urban middle class of the Edo period, known as the "Chōnin." Literally translated, Chonin means "townspeople" or "city dwellers," who were historically merchants, craftsmen, and other urban residents. Despite their significant economic role, they were ranked below samurai and farmers in the social hierarchy.
For the 8.5oz heavyweight loopwheeled fabric, Samurai uses only high-quality raw cotton spun into thick, irregular 14-thread yarns. The fabric is knitted on a vintage tubular knitting machine called "Daimaruki" (about 1 meter of fabric per hour), which was widely used in Japan in the first half of the 20th century.
Among the variety of Japanese loopwheel fabrics, the heavyweight, yet smoothly soft and remarkably textured knit has more than earned its rank as Yokozuna.
