In Japanese culture, rain embodies renewal and cleansing, evokes feelings of melancholy and impermanence, reflects a profound connection to nature and the changing seasons, and represents spiritual harmony, resilience, and endurance.
Studio D'Artisan's "Rain" series celebrates these themes through the traditions of Japanese indigo dyeing and Sashiko stitching. At its heart lies the "Ame Gasuri" (Rain Kasuri) fabric, distinguished by its unique patterns resembling falling raindrops, created by dyeing only the warp threads to form irregular, broken lines. This technique links the wearer to Japan's natural beauty and rural landscapes.
Kasuri is a Japanese weaving method akin to Ikat dyeing, first developed in the Ryukyu Kingdom (modern-day Okinawa). The fabrics are woven on vintage looms in Okayama and "bloom" after washing, revealing an almost three-dimensional texture. Originally, Sashiko was used to repair kimonos and workwear, but evolved into an art form, adding decorative patterns to garments.
The Rain Sashiko Jacket offers a contemporary twist on classic American workwear. Its relaxed, oversized fit is complemented by generously sized patch pockets, coated metal snaps, and intricately patterned piping, which complete its distinctive design.
